PREFACE

September 22, 1891

I, J.C.L. Breinholt, have this day, September 22, 1889, procured this book for the purpose of entering upon its pages a short and perhaps very imperfect history of my life.  I realize that it is rather late to commence a labor like this, it being in the fifty-first year of my life, but realizing the fact, as I believe it, that none of my father’s house have recorded anything concerning the historical facts of our family.  I feel it of some importance that something should be written for the benefit and information of our posterity already quite numerous.  And, as I am the oldest of my father’s children, I feel it the more binding upon me to take the lead in this duty, and by so doing claim that I am not hindering others of our house to do likewise and even excel what I shall be able to write.  Not having anything written before, I will in most instances have to trust to memory and therefore, in many cases I will be unable to give exact dates.  I further comprehend my own incompetence in performing this work in a very proper or efficient manner, it being my first attempt at doing anything of the kind.  Therefore, I hope that those of my descendants or relatives, who in after years may read this book will forbear and overlook errors and failings which on this account are apt to occur.  As stated before, not being in possession of any written records or manuscript, I will undoubtedly often fail in many instances in getting different items arranged in proper order.

Respectfully,

J.C.L. Breinholt
